Marine Conservation

No more plastic

It is estimated there is going to be more plastic by weight in the oceans than fish by 2050. Plastic is bad for the environment because it doesn’t biodegrade and it is going to remain on land and at sea clogging up the natural environment – this will cause harm to both wildlife and humans.

If you want to eat fish instead of plastic bags for your dinner, then the first step to take is to reduce your plastic usage and be mindful of Marine Conservation. It is better to buy a cheap reusable water bottle instead of throwing away the one you bought to use once. Replace one-use plastic straws with reusable straws. When you go out shopping, carry a reusable bag with you instead of the in-store plastic bags. Your oceans are going to remain clean when you choose reusable products, and this will also save you from having to buy plastic products over and over again.

Sensibly shopping for seafood

The population of fish in the world is going down very fast and this is due to overfishing. 70% of fish are facing a drastic decrease in population and there are risks of extinction. To deal with this issue, you need to buy seafood that used a non-destructive method.

One myth out there is it is expensive to eat sustainably, but you can actually save money by doing so. As you buy seafood, check out for certification of sustainability logos on the labels. It is a good idea to go to the local market and buy seafood that was caught on a smaller scale locally – this is most likely going to be cheaper. You should also explore new foods. you can end up discovering a new favorite food while reducing pressure on some species like salmon and cod.

Watching your watts

The lamp that you left back home is contributing to the destruction of oceans. The energy that you are using in your home for appliances and light is produced from burning fossil fuel which has been shown to contribute to ocean acidification.

You should make it a habit to unplug appliances when you are done using them, and it only takes you two seconds. You can also get some candles and have a nice meal with your partner or housemates by candlelight instead of turning on the lights. This is going to help the planet.

Littering less

The gum wrapper you drop when taking a walk on the sidewalk is going to end up in the ocean and harm marine life, no matter where you live. Have a small container or bag in your car that you will use when you don’t have any bins around you. Go for items that have less packaging because it reduces your waste levels. If you live in a coastal area or by a beach, then find out whether there are any beach clean-ups close to you. If there aren’t any, you can organize it with your friends. You might not be saving cash as a result of this tip, but you are doing it for the environment. No one likes litter around them.

Turning trash into treasure

If you were to closely look at the waste you are creating in just a week, from throwing away old clothes to food packaging, you will conclude that you need to do more. The items that are considered waste, especially plastic, end up damaging the environment. Before you throw them out, then see if there are any other ways of using them. The jar you want to throw can be used as a jewelry container. There are a lot of ways of turning your waste into something you can still use. You don’t have to spend a lot of money buying new things when you can revamp the old ones.

Exercising and not emissions

Atmospheric pollution is a serious problem with emissions coming from motorized vehicles the greatest contributor. Atmospheric pollution is bad for oceans because it increases acidity. Try to bike or walk wherever you need to go. If that is not possible, consider car-sharing with your colleagues and friends. This way, you can take one car instead of four. The trip is also going to be fun and saves money on parking and petrol. Another good option is public transport. It saves you the expenses of driving, especially when you get a monthly pass. You save money and also help the environment.
