Running a marathon is often considered the ultimate physical challenge. It takes months upon months of training and then when you get to it, there’s 26 gruelling miles to get through. The sense of achievement at the end, however, is like no other.
Every major city has a marathon, and some such as London, New York, Boston and Tokyo are more famous than others. There are then some truly unique ones too, adding elements of fun and intrigue to keep those feet moving and a smile on the face.
If you’re thinking of running a marathon, then we’d encourage you 100%. But rather than apply for the likes of London, or simply running your local one, why not try one of these rather unique marathons from around the world…
Las Vegas Marathon
Las Vegas is one of the most exciting marathons on the planet because you get to run right down the Strip, with the glitz, glam and bright lights beaming down on you. Part of the Rock ‘n’ Roll series, the race itself begins with a rock concert and there’s plenty of music along the way too. It starts late so you’re not caught up in the midday Nevada sun, while you also get to experience all the casinos lit up.
Of course, the best bit about a marathon is at the end when you can indulge a little, and what better place to do so than Sin City. It’s the gambling capital of the world, so when you’re ready for that well-earned sit down, why not do so in a casino, enjoying a battle not with your legs or mind but with a slot game or over a hand of Casino777 roulette. You’ll see many runners head straight onto the casino floor, and many will even provide runners with free drinks as they enjoy their favourite casino games.
Then there’s of course the shows, restaurants and nightclubs, all making for a once-in-a-lifetime experience both on and off the course.
Marathon du Medoc
The Marathon du Medoc is hosted each year in France and certainly offers running with a difference. The course takes you through a number of the country’s most famous vineyards and at each checkpoint, not only will you be well fuelled with water and energy drinks, but also a drop of wine and plenty of snacks as you go too.
It’s one of the most unique, and booziest, marathons in the world and always has a fabulous atmosphere, with 8,500 people making their way along the route. Located near Bordeaux, it’s accompanied by a backdrop of beautiful natural scenery and even involved plenty of partying both before and after the event. Just don’t expect to get a PB in this one.
Antarctica Marathon
You certainly need a bit of cash for this one, but if you’ve got it and want a real adventure, then the Antarctic Ice Marathon may be for you. It’s the world’s southernmost marathon and takes place in December each year at the foot of the Ellsworth Mountains. It’s a challenge like no other, braving the freezing cold temperature and dealing with the true isolation of no crowds pushing you along, like you’d find in the towns and cities worldwide.
Perhaps not one for your very first marathon, but for experienced runners, it’s one to remember for certain.
Great Wall Marathon
A marathon with a lot of steps and elevation change doesn’t quite appeal to us, but being able to say you’ve ran the Great Wall of China, or at least 26.2miles of it, is pretty special.
The race itself takes place on a small loop of the wall and involves a staggering 5,164 steps. It’s been in existence since 1999 and has long been a popular challenge for people all around the world. It’s demanding though, so if you want to take it on, make sure you do plenty of training that doesn’t involve simply running up and down your stairs.
